Submission Information

Required Materials for Design Board(s)

It is required that each presentation must directly address criteria outlined in the design challenge and evaluation criteria (but not limited to) the following required material: The dimensions of the “chair”.

More About the Descriptive Essays
You will provide two essays:

  1. A 300-500 word essay should appear as part of the presentation boards describing the most important concepts of the design project. The essay should also explain what was learned by building a “chair” out of corrugated paper, including how the structural elements of corrugated paper shaped the project. Keep in mind that the presentation should graphically convey the design solution as much as possible, and therefore it should not rely on the design essay for a basic understanding of the project. An electronic version of the essay as a Word document (.doc) or rich-text format (.rtf) must be included on the submitted compact disc.
  2. A three-seven paragraph essay that provides input on the effectiveness of ICPF’s Web site in describing the structural design careers for new architecture graduates and your evaluation of this alternative career opportunity (visit www.careersincorrugated.org and click on “Careers in Corrugated”). The essay should not appear on the presentation boards. This essay, while required, will not be incorporated into the jury’s evaluation of your chair’s design. An electronic version of the essay as a Word document (.doc) or rich-text format (.rtf) must be included on the submitted compact disc.

The submission form is located at the end of the program document.

No, the entry is looked at as a single submission.

2. Do both names need to appear on one entry-form or should there be two?

There needs to be one submission form with both names on it. The prizes and awards are set amounts and if you receive recognition that you, in your group, need to determine how to allocate the prizes or potential travel.

3. Can we use: paint, shellac, or varnish?

No, you can't use paint, since it disguises the cardboard appearance. Yes, you can use shellac and varnish, since they both act as a type of glue.

4. Can someone submit more than one project?

Yes, however if the person submitting is not a member, he/she will have to submit a registration fee for each project submitted.

5. In regards to the 25.5" x 33" board, does the competition guideline require a particular medium? i.e. pencil on board, prismacolor on board, ink on board. Are the final drawings supposed to be drafted on board and what type of board is required?

The board does not need to be any particular medium, but we do require that it have no projections off of it. You as the entrant can choose whatever medium you wish to present your submission on.

As to what medium should be used on the board: this is another area where you are allowed to determine which medium for presentation works best for you and your submission. Pencil, Prismacolor, and ink are all acceptable mediums, as well as digital and normal photography. These are not the only mediums one could use; they are only listed as options.

As to whether or not the drawings need to be drafted on the board, this is also up to you, as the entrant, to determine which method of presentation drawing works best for you and your presentation submission. We are open to multiple presentation mediums and styles.
