IN A RECORD BREAKING YEAR, 2007 AIAS/ICPF CHAIR AFFAIR COMPETITION WINNERS ANNOUNCED (download press release)
This was a record breaking year for the fourth annual AIAS/ICPF Chair Affair Student Design Competition in which students design chairs using nothing but corrugated board and glue. One hundred seventy six entries were submitted by teams or individuals representing 56 universities and colleges across the United States and Canada. The first tier jury has selected finalists and merit winners. The competition is sponsored by the International Corrugated Packaging Foundation (ICPF) and managed by the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS).
The finalists had their chairs on display and were judged in the second round jury at the 2007 AIA National Convention and Design Exposition in San Antonio in May. Chairs were exhibited in the AIAS Student Lounge and Gallery at the Convention. These finalists competed for over $7,125 worth of prize money. The winners are:
Nicholette Chan, Andrew Kim and Jean You – Cornell University
1st Place ($2500)


Cem Sinan Kayatekin – Auburn Univeristy
2nd Place ($1500)

Andrew Rudolph and Travis Withers – University of Louisiana at Lafayette
3rd Place ($1000)


Three Honorable Mentions ($500) were given to:
Yat-Hei Leung – University of Maryland – College Park


Christina Libetti and M. Boyce Postma – University of Colorado at Boulder

Sara Mikkelsen – University of Florida


The jurors included Wayne Drummond, FAIA, Dean of the College of Architecture at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln; Glenn Fellows, AIA, Principal with SMPC Architects; and Jaclyn S. Toole, Associate AIA from Bernardon Haber Holloway Architects PC.
The Tier One jury gave four merit awards in the following areas: aesthetics, innovation, construction process and comfort. Each merit winner will receive a certificate and $50 in prize money. The merit winners are:

The Chair Affair program challenges students, working individually or in teams, to explore a variety of uses of corrugated board in design and construction. Participants were required to design a “chair” using only corrugated board and glue. The Chair Affair’s definition of a chair is anything that elevates a user of an undetermined size off the ground comfortably for an extended period of time. The objectives of the competition were to encourage and reward excellence in design that integrates function, aesthetics, structure, ergonomics, details and fun.
The jurors included Patrick Cheek, of Torti Gallas and Partners, Inc.; Mary Fitch, AICP, Executive Director of the Washington Chapter of the American Institute of Architects; Richard Hayes, PhD, RAIC, AIA, Managing Director, Knowledge Resources at the American Institute of Architects; and Trinity Simons, Project Manager at the Mayors’ Institute on City Design.
Entries were received from 56 different schools including:
