Tier Two Results

The se
cond tier jury of the 2004 AIAS/ICPF Chair Affair Competition took place on June 10, 2004 at the AIA Convention and Design Exposition in Chicago. Jointly sponsored by the AIAS and the International Corrugated Packaging Foundation (ICPF), the program challengd students, working individually or in teams, to explore a variety of issues related to the use of the corrugated cardboard in design and construction. Participants were required to design a "chair" using only corrugated cardboard and glue. Chair Affair's definition of a chair is anything that elevates the user off the ground comfortably for an extended period of time. The objectives of the competition were to encourage and reward excellence in design that integrates function, aesthetics, structure, ergonomics, details and fun.

The six finalist chairs were judged and displayed at the 2004 AIA Convention in Chicago. Chairs were exhibited in the AIAS Student Lounge at the Design Exposition. These finalists competed for over $3475 worth of prize money. The prizes were awarded to:

The six finalist projects will be published in the Fall 2004 issue of CRiT, the journal of the AIAS. The first and second place winners will attend the SuperCorrExpo 2004 and the Association of Independent Corrugate Converters Convention in Atlanta, GA (November 11-12, 2004). Winners will be honored on stage before the general assembly on Friday, November 11th.

The second tier jurors included Carol Ross Barney, FAIA, Design Principal at Ross Barney + Jankowski Architects; Marvin Malecha, FAIA, Dean at North Carolina State University; and Stanley Tigerman, FAIA of Tigerman McCurry Architects.

Tier One Results
The first tier of the AIAS/ICPF Chair Affair Competition took place on May 1, 2004. The jury selected six finalists who will have their chairs judged and displayed at the 2004 AIA Convention in Chicago. The jurors also selected three honorable mentions to be acknowledged publicly as well.

The tier one jury gave four merit awards in the following areas: aesthetics, comfort, process and structural capacity. Each merit winner will receive a certificate and $50 in prize money. The merit winners are:

The tier one jurors included Ehren Gaag, AIA, an Associate at Gensler; Barbara Laurie, AIA of Devrouax & Purnell Architects, Planners, P.C. and a faulty member of Howard University; Kara S. Strong, AIA, LEED, a Project Manager at Einhorn Yaffee Prescott Architecture & Engineering P.C. and a member of the AIA DC Committee on the Environment (COTE) and Margaret Tarampi, Associate AIA, a Research Consultant for the Academy of Neuroscience of Architecture.
