2005 APC/AIAS PARK VISITOR CENTER DESIGN COMPETITION WINNERS ANNOUNCED (Download Press Release)

The jury for the 2005 APC/AIAS Park Visitor Center Design Competition took place on April 30, 2005. The program challenged students, working individually or in teams, to design a new Visitor Center for the Monocacy National Battlefield site located outside of Frederick, MD. The program encouraged students to learn about materials, specifically plastics and plastic composites, and their assembly in the design of a park visitor center and build knowledge about sustainability, and "green" building. The competition was sponsored by the American Plastics Council (APC) and administered by the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS).

The jury selected the top three winners and three honorable mentions. These projects will be exhibited in the AIAS Student Lounge and Gallery at the 2005 AIA National Convention and Design Exposition in Las Vegas in mid-May. The judges felt that "all three of these projects, while differently, responded to the land - the first place project elevated above the site, the second cut through the site and the third meandered through the site." The prizes were awarded to:

Jeff Carnell, Hyun-Soo Kim, Chun Kit Leung, and Jean-Luc Torchon - City College of New York
First Prize ($2500)

Chad Wanstreet - Keene State College
Second Prize ($1500)

Erica Jill Lockhart and Meghan Storm - Savannah College of Art and Design
Third Place ($750)

The AIAS chapter at each school also receives a cash prize.

The jury also awarded Honorable Mentions ($500) to the following:

Kevin Clement - University of Washington

Nicholas Micheels - University of Nebraska

Allison Struck - University of Nebraska

The six projects will be published in the Fall 2005 issue of Crit, the journal of the AIAS.

The jurors included Anik Jhavari, AIA, a Senior Designer at HDR, Inc.; Barbara Laurie, AIA of Devrouax & Purnell Architects, Planners, P.C. and a faulty member of Howard University; Mark McInturff, FAIA, Prinicpal of McInturff Architects; Scott Windley, an Accessibility Specialist with the United States Access Board; and D'Lane Wisner of D'Lane Wisner & Associates, LLC.

The AIAS congratulates all the winners and thanks all the competition participants.
