SUMMARY:AIAS GRASSROOTS 2023
DESCRIPTION:AIAS Grassroots Leadership Conference\nUN | REST\n— \nJuly 20 – July 23\, 2023 \n\nrest – focus on mental health\, positive culture\, taking care of each other\, architecture that heals\nunrest – advocacy\, change\, disruption\, justice\, dedication \nRest and unrest demonstrates a dichotomy that exists within architectural education and celebrates the balance that we all aim to find. Celebrating rest means celebrating mental health\, positive culture\, taking care of each other\, and architecture that heals. Celebrating unrest means celebrating the advocacy\, change\, disruption\, justice\, and dedication needed to push our profession forward. \nThe dynamic between rest and unrest is not only about health and advocacy; it is also a celebration of passion. Architecture students are relentless in their pursuits of design\, leadership\, and service\, and we want to encourage them to pursue every passion with both rest and unrest. \nThe theme intends to celebrate advocacy and change\, but we want to be clear that the AIAS does not support violence of any kind. Our organization has a legacy of championing progress\, and AIAS supports all forms of peaceful protest. The theme of Grassroots celebrates advocacy and change\, and we intend to continue this work throughout the coming year. \nAs famed civil rights leader and former Congressman John Lewis once said\, “nothing can stop the power of a committed and determined people to make a difference in our society.” \nFor more information and to register\, visit the full event page here.

SUMMARY:AIAS Quad Conferences - Informational Call
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an informational call where we will discuss programming requirements\, things you need to keep in mind\, and any other important information you may need in order to host a successful Quad Conference in 2024. Additionally\, this is a great time to ask questions! \nEach year\, regional conferences take place in the Midwest\, Northeast\, South\, and West Quads. These gatherings\, known as Quad Conferences\, are hosted by local chapters who have been selected to organize the event by their Quad. Themes vary based on the city\, local culture\, and topics of choice. \nQuad Conferences are a terrific way to meet other students in your region\, learn about architecture outside of the classroom\, and have a lot of fun! \nIf your Chapter is interested in bidding\, read through the Bid Packet linked below! The responsibilities for Quad Conferences have been reconsidered and shifted to alleviate pressure on the student planning teams\, and the bidding timeline has been condensed\, so please pay attention to the responsibilities page and the timeline. \n BID PACKET\nNote: South and West Quads will be bidding for conferences that occur in Spring 2024\, while Midwest and Northeast Quads will be bidding for conferences that occur in Fall 2024. There are recommended dates suggested by the AIAS National Office in the bid packet. If you have questions\, please reach out to Jody Allen\, Director of Programs and Education at jodyallen@aias.org.

SUMMARY:THRIVE Webinar - Galvanize Your Campus: Core Webinar by American Galvanizers Association
DESCRIPTION:The Galvanize Your Campus: Core Webinar introduces students to the basics of hot-dip galvanized steel. For more than 100 years\, hot-dip galvanizing has been a mainstay of North American industry. Used in various applications in some of the harshest environments\, hot-dip galvanizing combats corrosion throughout the world. Though corrosion resistance is inherent any time galvanizing is used\, more specifiers select hot-dip galvanizing now for other reasons including lowest initial and life-cycle cost\, durability\, longevity\, versatility\, sustainability\, and aesthetics. This course will examine the hot-dip galvanizing process as well as other zinc coatings\, and detail the intrinsic benefits galvanizing provides. \nThe American Galvanizers Association is also having a drawing to give away a $100 VISA gift card. Register and attend the webinar to be eligible for the drawing! \nRegister here. \n  \nFor more information on the American Galvanizers Association\, visit their website.

SUMMARY:2023 Northeast Quad Conference - “SP[ARCH]” - Marywood University
DESCRIPTION:There is nothing quite like visiting a place of history\, somewhere embedded in its own culture\, to spark a curiosity and interest to learn. Architecture in these locations act as a physical embodiment of a time long gone that can bridge the gap between the seemingly obsolete and present day. The name SP[ARCH] grounds us in the sense of originality and revival\, a flash of light highlighting the success of Scranton’s most prominent moments in industrial history\, then burning consistently throughout the years in the hearts of the people who live here. The successes of Scranton still glow from the day the forges were lit and the electric lights and trolley earned it the title “Electric City.” Through this conference we hope to investigate these timeless legacies and learn to carry their light within us\, shining a new perspective on the future of architecture. \n\nSP[ARCH] will host students at Marywood University and offer programming within downtown Scranton. This conference will explore the historic origins of Scranton born from iron\, coal\, and steam\, to electricity and beyond. Scranton was birthplace and home to a young Jane Jacobs\, a predominant architectural advocate for higher density in cities\, short blocks\, local economies\, and mixed uses. We are excited to share this rich history of Scranton\, our city\, to the Northeast Quad through local firm tours\, historic and cultural city tours. Additionally\, we have exciting studio workshops planned to cover 3D printing\, design build challenges\, birditecture\, and a live K-12 workshop with the students of Nativity Miguel. Finally\, attendees will be invited to attend a career expo with business professionals\, our annual Beaux Arts Ball\, and informal Council of Presidents meeting.

SUMMARY:2023 South Quad Conference - “Revival” - Savannah College of Art & Design
DESCRIPTION:Since it was first laid out in 1733 on a high bluff overlooking the Savannah River by General James Edward Oglethorpe\, the act of preservation has cast a new light on Savannah. The value of preservation has shown tourists and locals alike the beauty of Savannah and its culture\, which is true to the people who lived there many years ago. Savannah and its unique city plan\, from street preservation to architecture\, have become a hallmark of planning and sustainable urban growth\, earning it the moniker “Forest City of the South.” A stroll through Savannah reveals a diverse building tradition spanning three centuries of architectural history. As a result\, historical architectural preservation has evolved into a model concept that can extend beyond the revitalization of a building to include the sustainability of architecture and cities. \n\nOver 1\,000 students study Architecture\, Architectural History\, Furniture Design\, Historic Preservation\, Interior Design\, and Urban Design at the SCAD School of Building Arts. Clark Hall\, initially named Eichberg Hall\, built in 1887 for the Central of Georgia Railroad and re-inhabited by SCAD as a cutting-edge facility for studying the building arts\, houses the School of Building Arts. As a result\, the history of Savannah and SCAD is founded on preserving and revitalizing structures while retaining their original beauty and essence. \nWhen we leave Savannah\, the topic of preservation shapes our thinking and goal of restoring the virtues of preservation and the purpose of a place. Savannah’s National Historic Landmark District is an unrivaled setting for architectural studies. The city’s extensive urban plan and diverse architecture are admired by architects and planners worldwide. Savannah and the surrounding region provide a learning environment that informs the SCAD architecture curriculum through exposure to the urban scale and contextual design and an awareness of the personal scale and relationship between the pedestrian and the city. Students live\, work\, and play in Savannah\, one of the United States’ most extensive National Historic Landmark Districts. SCAD has restored nearly 60 historic buildings in the city\, which are now filled with art\, beauty\, and technology for students to use as a source of insight and inspiration. Outside the university\, students work on regional projects\, gaining real-world experience while balancing business demands\, local priorities\, sustainability\, and heritage value.

SUMMARY:2023 West Quad Conference - “Extremes” - Arizona State University
DESCRIPTION:Just like the fiery rebirth of the mythical symbol\, Phoenix\, Arizona has been at the forefront of growth\, speed\, and innovation in the southwest after a period of extreme transformation in a scorching environment. It was largely an agricultural state until the 1960’s when it started to see massive urban growth that reflected the “american dream”. Automobile centric development\, sprawl of single family structures\, and new industries began to mold the valley into a place fit for urban development and commercial investment. This led to a boom in sporadic and ill-planned urban sprawl\, in an already challenging environment. Today designers all over the area have begun rethinking and reshaping the way that we build and use our spaces with the environmental conditions as a driving factor for change. \n\nThe theme of this conference is based on the architectural and urban challenges that Arizona faces as one of the hottest states in the U.S. Confronted by 111 annual days of triple digit heat\, a continuing water crisis as population booms\, and a 454% increase in heat related deaths since 2014\, the crisis is\, in fact\, here. Although it is one of the hottest locations\, in the next 30 years\, many other cities will be faced with the same challenges. So the “Extremes: Urban Adaptation and Innovation” conference will serve as a warning sign\, a display of experimentation\, and innovation in dire circumstances in the land of scorching growth.

SUMMARY:2023 Midwest Quad Conference - “RE-imagine” - University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
DESCRIPTION:As architects\, imagination is the bedrock of our soul. Our innate longing is to envision a better built environment for our community and the entire world. Architecture has the power to impact everyone at a fundamental level: from the basic need for shelter to the emotional symphony of form. We learn from architects of the past to create beauty never before seen or experienced. \nIn a world of ever-changing variables such as population growth\, diminishing resources\, economic struggles\, and health crises\, we are entrusted with the responsibility of bringing hope to the world through our designs. As architects\, we must decide how to move forward; we must inspire the world to continue to imagine and thrive. \nHow can we maintain the history of our home while embarking on a new chapter? How can new materials produce a new conception of structure and form? How can we re-define the use of a building so that it is utilized to its fullest? How can we protect the beauty of architectural design in a world that seeks pre-fabrication and ease? This is the power of re-imagination. \n\nRe-imagine is a continuation of the AIAS mission to stabilize after the pandemic and encapsulates today’s essence of architecture within Milwaukee\, Wisconsin. With the completion of the world’s tallest mass-timber building\, the new design of the Milwaukee Public Museum which will break ground in 2023\, and the city’s rich\, multicultural history\, Milwaukee exemplifies the way history can help the re-imagination of the future. Through firm and landmark visits\, cultural experiences (and GOOD FOOD!)\, lectures\, networking opportunities\, and workshops\, our UW-Milwaukee Team hopes to provide the Midwest with the resources to re-imagine their communities to improve the future!

SUMMARY:AISC PRESENTS - Thrive Webinar Series - Requisite Autonomy to Revivify the Master Builder
DESCRIPTION:This event is over\, but you can watch the full video below: \n \n  \nJoin us for another THRIVE webinar Watch Party on February 9\, 2023\, at 4:00 pm EST with AISC featuring Stan Carroll’s design and fabrication process using computational methods: \n  \nRequisite Autonomy to Revivify the Master Builder\nDecades of diverse professional experience as an architect\, fabricator\, and sculptor have been a fertile training ground for Stan Carroll in revivifying the 21st-century Master Steel Builder through digitization. The three contributing mindsets include 1) Having an unyielding excitement and dedication to the detail of tectonics. 2) Effectively managing the less glamorous aspects of each project; 3) Developing skills as a hands-on builder\, digital modeler\, and digital fabricator. In this presentation\, Mr. Carroll will expose the critical connections to the design of complexity through pragmatic detailing\, digital methods\, and necessary iterative prototyping in a 21st-century digital workflow. \nAbout Stan Carroll \nLiving and breathing a digital 3D design-centric career that stretches well beyond the typical domain of an architect and deeply into advanced computational design and digital fabrication\, Carroll\, a 25-year architectural practitioner\, regularly has tested the limits of form and function under the name of Beyond Metal since 1998. His work spans from the design phase to the hands-on fabrication within the domains of furniture design\, building design\, urban place making\, and large-scale public art. \nIn 2009 Carroll’s design process was transformed by a seemingly trivial decision to learn computer coding. This decision ultimately redefined his firm and career path in a most profound way. Computational methods provide access to vastly more complex 3D forms previously inaccessible with 20th-century tools. \nFor the past ten years\, Carroll has taken advantage of the newfound computational methodologies in a variety of groundbreaking teaching methods and works of public art. Highlights include his role as co-designer on the award-winning\, 198 feet tall\, SkyDance Pedestrian Bridge in Oklahoma City and his current work as principal designer of the Doris Miller Memorial in Waco\, Texas. At the heart of this memorial is a stainless steel wall that advances the geometrics of modern construction systems. \n  \nAlso\, you can watch the previous webinar\, “Architecture and Hybrid Structures: Maximizing the Benefits of Structural Steel and Wood Floors” on the AIAS YouTube channel! AISC offers free Steel Conference registration\, student member discounts on seminars and publications\, a free digital subscription to Modern Steel Construction\, and much more.
