SUMMARY:Where are the Women Designers? A Conversation Between Pitt & W+iD
DESCRIPTION:Host Chapter\nUniversity of Pittsburgh \nDescription:\nPlease join us for this invigorating and timely conversation about how we can build equity together\, meaningfully connecting our academic institutions to the industry to ensure that the passionate and dedcated efforts on both sides can fuel positive\, sustainable change. \nWe will use Despina Stratigakos’ 2017 book “Where are the Women Architects?” as a foundation for this conversation. The slim volume addresses the legacy of white male dominance of the profession head on and amplifies the voices of those working to bring us into a more equitable future. Though Stratigakos does not shy away from the challenges we still face\, the book ultimately leaves us with hope that change is possible\, is necessary\, and is happening. \nAll are welcome to attend\, architects and non-architects\, readers and non-readers alike. \n3:30-4:30pm ET \n  \n Register Here!

DESCRIPTION:Host Chapter\nUniversity of Tennessee Knoxville \nDescription:\nOur 2020-2021 lecture series continues on March 22\, 2021\, 6:30 p.m. ET\, with a lecture featuring Karen Braitmayer\, FAIA\, founder and managing principal of Studio Pacifica\, an accessibility consulting firm in Seattle. \nBraitmayer’s “good fight” has consistently focused on supporting equity and full inclusion for persons with disabilities. In 2019\, she was chosen as the national winner of the AIA Whitney M. Young\, Jr. award—a prestigious award given to an architect who “embodies social responsibility and actively addresses a relevant issue.” In the award’s 48-year history\, she was the first recipient honored for their work in the area of civil rights for persons with disabilities. A registered architect\, Braitmayer was also appointed by President Barack Obama to the United States Access Board\, a position she retains today. \nKaren BraitmayerBraitmayer’s lecture\, “You Have the Power\,” takes a deep dive into generations of disability activism\, legislative history that impacted the architectural profession and examples of private and public projects in which architects chose to create noteworthy designs inspired (and often enhanced) by accessibility requirements. \nSpeaker:\nKaren Braitmayer \n  \n Register Here!\n
