With Grassroots and Leadership Day quickly approaching, this is the place for all frequently asked questions about these events!

Who should attend Leadership Day? Is it just for chapter presidents?

Leadership Day isn’t just for chapter presidents! It’s designed for all members that are interested in participating and advancing their leadership within their chapter and the organization at large. Attending Leadership Day can be a fantastic opportunity for newer members (or potential members) to see all the exciting things you can do within the AIAS locally, regionally, nationally, and beyond! And it’s free!

What’s the difference between Leadership Day and Grassroots?

Usually the training offered at Leadership Day occurs during Grassroots, but this year, we separated the two events and made Leadership Day virtual in order to make it more accessible to more chapter leaders.

While the in-person Grassroots conference will provide opportunities for chapters and quads to gather together and socialize/strategize, much of the content of Grassroots will focus on personal leadership training, community building, and the chance to take advantage of all that Washington, DC has to offer in person.

If I register for Grassroots, am I automatically signed up for Leadership Day?

No, you need to sign up for Leadership Day as well, but that is free! You can register here.

Are there any mandatory activities in person?

Nothing at Grassroots is mandatory, but you’ll want to attend as much as possible in order to get your money’s worth. There are keynote sessions on Thursday and Saturday, a Career Expo and Block Party on Friday, and tours and workshops Friday and Saturday. Get more details here.

If I wasn’t a member in 2021-2022 do I have to renew for 2022-2023 to get a member registration rate?

Yes, you do need to renew your membership for 2022-2023 or join for the first time in order to get the member rate. Once you do, your membership will last through May 31, 2023.

If I am a member in 2021-2022 but don’t want to renew yet for 2022-2023 can I still get a member registration rate?

2021-2022 memberships end on May 31, 2022 but we are happy to extend the Grassroots member registration rate to those who will not be renewing if their reason for not renewing is graduation. Please reach out to to set this up. In all other cases, the options available to members are: register before May 31, 2022 (also the early bird deadline) or renew for the 2022-2023 year before registering for Grassroots.

What is the bulk registration process? How many people are needed? Is there a discount?

Please reach out to the AIAS National Office at to receive a template spreadsheet and other materials to process a bulk registration. For Grassroots 2022, while there is no discount for bulk registration, there is no minimum number of registrants requirement to process a bulk registration. The National Office can also create a unique discount code for your chapter if you would like to pay to subsidize part or all of the cost of a ticket.

Who from my Executive Board is eligible for free registration?

Your FBD Director and your NCARB Student Licensing Advisor are eligible to receive grants to attend Grassroots. Information on both grants can be found here.

If my Chapter doesn’t have an NCARB Student Licensing Advisor can we appoint one now for that student to attend?

Yes, you can! Your Chapter President can appoint a Student Licensing Advisor–we just recommend that it be someone who already has or is about to begin their NCARB record.

Do you have to have an active FBD project for an FBD representative to apply for free registration?

Nope! All you need is someone who is planning to start or continue an FBD project in the coming year.

How do I sign up for a particular tour or workshop session?

Information about signing up for particular tours or workshops, including the maximum capacity for each, will be sent out on July 14 directly to registrants, so once you register for Grassroots, keep an eye on your inbox on that date! Don’t forget to add as a contact so we don’t get filtered out of your inbox as spam.

How do I travel to DC?

Depending on where you are and how you’d like to travel, you can get to Grassroots by plane, car, train, or bus. If you’re flying into Washington, DC, we recommend flying into Reagan Washington National Airport, also known as National Airport and DCA, as it’s closer to the conference. If you’re taking the train, be sure to take it to Washington Union Station. Most major bus services stop at Union Station as well.

Do I have to stay in the conference hotel?

You don’t; in fact, no Grassroots programming will happen at the Hilton Garden Inn. Grassroots will be a decentralized conference that will take place throughout downtown DC. With this in mind, we suggest you book through services such as Airbnb and Vrbo and prioritize proximity to Metro stops along the Red Line.

There may still be a few rooms available at the Hilton, however. Visit the Hilton website to check availability.

Is there a dress code for Grassroots?

Washington, DC in late July tends to be fairly hot and humid. Since you’ll be moving around the city quite a bit, we suggest you dress in light, casual, comfortable clothing and comfortable shoes. Remember to pack sun protection (hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, etc). If you’ll be participating in the Career Expo on Friday, you’ll be meeting with professionals, so dress accordingly for that, but still remember there’s a block party going on as well!

Will food be served during Grassroots, or will I have to find my own meals?

We will provide food and drink during the Block Party on Friday afternoon/evening. Other than that, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to explore the multiethnic cuisine of Washington, DC, as we’ll provide time for lunch on Friday and Saturday.
