Public Comment Period Now Open!

The public comment period regarding proposed changes to federal student aid and the classification of professional degrees is now open, and this moment matters.

Over the past several weeks, we have been listening through surveys, comments, and direct conversations with you. What we are hearing is consistent and clear:

  • Access is at risk. Many of you rely on federal funding to pursue architecture, particularly first-generation students, low-income students, parents, veterans, international students, and those without family financial support.
  • The rigor of architectural education is being dismissed. You have been clear that the time, cost, responsibility, and licensure requirements of this path are real, and the proposed reclassification feels disconnected from the reality of your education and future practice.
  • This affects the future of the profession. Beyond individual impact, there is deep concern about who will be able to enter architecture moving forward and what is lost when access narrows.

What We Are Doing Now

  • Working together across the profession. We are working closely with our Alliance partners to coordinate advocacy around these proposed changes, while continuing to speak up directly on behalf of students. By aligning our efforts, we are making sure student voices are heard clearly and consistently as part of a broader, profession-wide response.
  • Direct engagement in Washington, DC. In February, our President-Elect, Luke Vastano, will be on Capitol Hill as part of the AIA Leadership Summit, continuing to advocate on your behalf and reinforcing the student perspective directly with decision-makers.
  • Elevating your voices. Your survey responses, comments, and lived experiences are actively informing our advocacy. These real stories are critical to demonstrating the human impact behind policy language.

What You Can Do Right Now

The public comment period is one of the most important opportunities for your voice to be heard. We encourage you to:

  1. Submit a public comment sharing how these proposed changes affect you, your education, or your future in the profession.
  2. Speak from experience. Personal stories about access, cost, rigor, licensure, and impact are especially influential.
  3. Stay engaged as we continue to share updates and advocacy opportunities.

See below for clear, step-by-step instructions on how to submit a public comment.

We will continue to update this page with resources, guidance, and next steps as the process moves forward.

Thank you for trusting us with your perspectives, your concerns, and your commitment to this profession. We are listening, we are advocating, and we are working together with our Alliance partners to protect access to architectural education and the future of the profession.

With resolve and appreciation,

2025–2026 AIAS Board of Directors
The American Institute of Architecture Students
