June 2025 Chapter Leader of the Month: Sylas Rodriguez-Sullivan
University of New MexicoSylas Rodriguez-Sullivan is a senior architecture student at the University of New Mexico with a major in architecture and minor in film production.
“My involvement with AIAS at the University of New Mexico began with a commitment to inclusion and the belief that fostering opportunities for others is equally as important as personal growth. Upon assuming the role of Chapter President, my primary objective was to connect with and cultivate an environment in which every student—regardless of background—felt seen, supported, and empowered to pursue their interests within the field of architecture. Contributing to the addition of opportunities in spaces where they have traditionally been limited has been a largely rewarding experience.
I am deeply grateful for the team I have had the privilege to work alongside. Our collective efforts have brought several impactful initiatives to fruition, including securing student representation within local AIA components, appointing a student licensing advisor, and strengthening the bridge between academic and professional communities. Together, we have organized student-led fabrication workshops, moderated discussions with industry professionals, arranged local site tours, and funded student attendance at national conferences. Additionally, through our engagement with AIAS at the national level, we successfully launched a NOMAS chapter at our institution, further reinforcing our commitment to equity and representation. These achievements were made possible by the shared passion and dedication of our chapter members. It is the spirit of collaboration and vision that continues to drive our mission, to create opportunities that not only serve current students but lay the groundwork for future generations.”
Trevin Thompson, who nominated Sylas for this feature, highlighted his collaborative spirit:
“As President of the University of New Mexico Chapter, Sylas has been a steadfast leader driving forward a plethora of events on their campus every month, ranging from their recent
successes in their Once Upon a Time themed Beaux Arts Ball, to chapter hikes, firm tours and even an architectural book sale and other fundraisers. While his efforts in making his chapter
active locally and within the larger quad are commendable, it is his dedication to developing and fostering a welcoming and positive culture within the UNM AIAS chapter that makes him stand out.”
