April 2026 Chapter Leader of the Month: Hector Martinez
University of Massachusetts AmherstThe AIAS is proud to recognize Hector Martinez from the University of Massachusetts Amherst as our April Chapter Leader of the Month, celebrating his dedication to service, community impact, and hands-on learning.
During his time with UMass AIAS, including two years as Chapter President, Hector led impactful design-build initiatives that became a defining part of the chapter’s work. Through a continued partnership with the Stavros Center for Independent Living, students designed and constructed residential accessibility ramps, gaining hands-on experience while supporting members of their local community. These projects reinforced the role of architecture in advancing equity and inclusion.
Hector also guided the chapter in creating a Little Free Library for University Village, a housing community for UMass students with children. Designed and built by students from start to finish, the project fostered creativity, connection, and a shared sense of ownership within the community.
Beyond project work, Hector strengthened the chapter through mentorship, collaboration, and advocacy. He supported partnerships with groups such as Women in Architecture and the Graduate Governance Group, served as the student liaison for Western Mass AIA, and helped ensure programming remained accessible and impactful.
His commitment to service extends beyond campus. Hector has contributed to community efforts with the German Gerena Community School and mentored high school students through the TRIO Upward Bound Program, emphasizing that architecture is an inclusive and attainable path for all.
As shared by his nominator, Wrileidy Lopez:
“Hector has been instrumental in revitalizing the chapter, fostering meaningful engagement across campus and beyond, and strengthening connections between students and the professional community. His leadership reflects a deep commitment to service, mentorship, and inspiring others to lead with purpose.”
Hector’s leadership reflects the power of design as a tool for service and community building. We are proud to celebrate him as April’s Chapter Leader of the Month.
