Shelter Global, an international architecture non-profit, has just announced the winners of its 2017 Dencity Competition. The goal of the competition is to foster new ideas on how to handle the growing density of unplanned cities and to spread awareness of this massive problem. There are currently over one billion slum dwellers in the world. This number is expected to reach two billion by the year 2030. Now, more than ever, architects and planners need to play a central role in the development of substandard neighborhoods. Contestants were asked to consider how design can empower communities and allow for a self-sufficient future. The competition jury consisted of eight renowned architects and urban planners and the 2016-2017 AIAS President Sarah Wahlgren and Vice President Rachel Law.
