Hi everyone!

We’re super excited to announce that the South Quad Conference for the Spring of 2022 will be hosted in a hybrid format from Atlanta, Georgia!

The event will be co-hosted by the Auburn and Georgia Tech chapters who are both super excited about this conference and opportunity! The dates of the conference are going to be Thursday, March 31st – Sunday, April 3rd with events across Midtown and Downtown Atlanta! The theme for our conference is going to be Waste//Land! It couldn’t be a quad conference without an ambiguous name, right? To give you a bit more background, the title can be read as both wasteland and  “waste” / ”land”.

The conference will be focusing on the use and misuse of space as we have developed our sprawling landscapes and city centers. The first day of the conference will focus on the “Waste”, bringing to light the practices and methods that have led us to creating spaces that are both misused and inequitable. The second day will focus on the “Land” with attempting to create an understanding of the ways in which we use these given spaces and the innovations that have occurred to challenge the given notion of what we understand our cities to be and make them into something that better fits and connects to the human experience. This theme is something that we’ve been thinking about and working on for a long time and look forward to showing all of this to all of you! Over the 3-4 days of the conference we’re excited to have a bunch of hybrid and virtual opportunities throughout the city. We’re hoping to have an in-person Beaux Arts Ball hopefully with a separate virtual component for an After Dark event for our virtual attendees, an in-person panel on ‘Race and Space in Architecture’ with a diverse panel of guests from across professional careers and the city of Atlanta itself, in-person workshops that have virtual components that are just as engaging and interactive for our virtual attendees, and professional development mixers with members of AIA Atlanta, NOMA Atlanta, and YAF Atlanta! The programming is still in the works and will be announced more soon on the official South Quad Conference Instagram! (Be sure to go follow for more updates coming up!! @aias_squadcon) As you all know, this will be the first conference the AIAS has put on with an in-person component since Forum 2019! This is both a huge honor for our chapters and a big challenge for us to put on!
While COVID restrictions continue to get lighter and lighter across the South Quad, we are committed and focused on the health and safety of our attendees over anything else. Below is a list of the steps we are trying to take in order to ensure the conference goes well and safe for both our attendees and our planning team :
  • Masks will be required at all events
  • All venue capacity maximums will be respected, no questions asked (we are working to ensure all of our venues can have as many people as possible).
  • Proof of vaccination or negative COVID test that is taken and received within 72 hours of the conference beginning.
  • The planning team and National Office reserve the right to push the conference to be fully virtual at any time if health or safety become an issue or concern.
We are super excited to be sharing this conference with all of you and hope to see as many of you as possible in Atlanta next spring! If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to reach out to the South Quad Director Jessie Cart () or one of the co-chairs, Colt Brock () or Collin Brown (). Please look forward to hearing more about registration in the coming weeks as we finalize all of the dates and times for that!
