Welcome to the 2023 Northeast Quad Conference – “SP[ARCH]”!

There is nothing quite like visiting a place of history, somewhere embedded in its own culture, to spark a curiosity and interest to learn. Architecture in these locations act as a physical embodiment of a time long gone that can bridge the gap between the seemingly obsolete and present day. The name SP[ARCH] grounds us in the sense of originality and revival, a flash of light highlighting the success of Scranton’s most prominent moments in industrial history, then burning consistently throughout the years in the hearts of the people who live here. The successes of Scranton still glow from the day the forges were lit and the electric lights and trolley earned it the title “Electric City.” Through this conference we hope to investigate these timeless legacies and learn to carry their light within us, shining a new perspective on the future of architecture.

SP[ARCH] will host students at Marywood University and offer programming within downtown Scranton. This conference will explore the historic origins of Scranton born from iron, coal, and steam, to electricity and beyond. Scranton was birthplace and home to a young Jane Jacobs, a predominant architectural advocate for higher density in cities, short blocks, local economies, and mixed uses. We are excited to share this rich history of Scranton, our city, to the Northeast Quad through local firm tours, historic and cultural city tours. Additionally, we have exciting studio workshops planned to cover 3D printing, design build challenges, birditecture, and a live K-12 workshop with the students of Nativity Miguel. Finally, attendees will be invited to attend a career expo with business professionals, our annual Beaux Arts Ball, and informal Council of Presidents meeting.
