February 2020 Chapter Leader of the Month: Katie Cherrier
Spokane Community CollegeKatie Cherrier is a second year architecture student at Spokane Community College and works at Integrus Architecture. She quickly joined her local AIAS chapter as a general member and the following spring was elected Chapter President. Between raising her three active children and balancing her student and professional life, she has always found AIAS to be a priceless resource and positive learning experience.
Over the past year, Katie has built relationships within her community including with fellow AIAS members in her chapter, the local AIA Spokane Chapter, and with many industry professionals throughout the region. Her chapter has hosted guest speakers, volunteered with community partners, and attended the West Quad Conference for the 15th year in a row. For the first time in this chapter’s history, four students were sent to the FORUM conference in Toronto! Most recently, Katie has guided her chapter in participating in a cross-chapter tour and meet ‘n’ greet with the WSU and U of I chapters. After experiencing a broader understanding that architecture is community, she has focused on ways to maintain a healthy longevity for her chapters’ executive board and to support her chapter and its’ members in the years to come.
Alex Geisen West Quad Director-Elect says Katie has created waves for not only her chapter but in the West Quad. “Her passionate and energetic personality as a leader has increased membership growth, involvement, and outreach not only to additional chapters in the AIAS but AIA as well. Katie is an incredible mom, student, AIAS member, and leader who will go above and beyond to make a positive impact on someones life. She deserves Leader of the Century for the impacts she has made for her chapter,” says Alex.
Sara Taketatsu West Quad Director says that Katie is an incredibly selfless leader who has worked tirelessly to support AIAS members in her chapter and beyond. “While being a chapter president who listens carefully to the needs of members, she also has an incredible vision for chapter growth. Her focus never wavers from ensuring members have all the resources they need to be successful students,” says Sara.
